The Italian GP last weekend saw a nasty crash between title rivals Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, and Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko believes the Brit is faking his injuries.
The incident saw Verstappen’s Red Bull car lift from a curb and brutally land on the seven-time world champion’s Mercedes, with the inside of a rear wheel crashing on his helmet in the process.
Hamilton was consequently rushed to the hospital for checks and took to social media hours later to update his fans on his condition, revealing that he was experiencing “headaches” and a “tight neck.”
However, despite needing to see a specialist, the Mercedes driver attended the star-studded Met Gala in New York just 24 hours later - and was even one of the fan favourites of the show.
The Red Bull chief isn’t all too convinced of Hamilton’s injuries, though, and even went as far as to dispute that the driver was even badly hurt.
He told German newspaper Osterreich: “'It was a normal racing accident. All the stories around it were pulled up by the hair by Mercedes.
“Verstappen had already got out when Hamilton tried to go back to get out of the gravel.
The medical car saw that and drove on. And then a show is put on that poor Hamilton is suddenly injured.
The anger was most likely fuelled by the fact Red Bull driver Verstappen was believed to be at fault for the incident, and was handed a three-place penalty for the upcoming Russian Grand Prix on September 26.
However, the Dutchman’s lead in the Drivers’ Championship was increased to five points after his second-placed efforts in Saturday’s sprint qualifying.
Hamilton further confirmed his safety via his social media channels, saying: "It's days like today, I am reminded of how lucky I am.
"It takes a millisecond to go from racing to a very scary situation. Today someone must have been looking down, watching over me!
"My necks a bit sore as the adrenaline wears off - it was a bit of a hit on the head, so naturally I have one big headache but I'm doing okay!
"The Halo stopped the crash from being a lot worse and I'm incredibly grateful to all those that work to make our cars and racing safer. TeamLH ... the support I receive from you keeps me pushing and fighting.
"I'm so thankful for each and everyone of you, you are truly the best. Still we rise!”
