Journalist Paul Brown claims Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is being branded as "Primark Pep" in some quarters due to bombarding players with instructions from the touchline.

How are Arsenal performing under Arteta?

Arteta, who made 150 appearances during a lengthy spell with Arsenal during his playing career, was appointed as the Gunners' head coach following the sacking of Unai Emery in 2019.

Having begun his coaching career on Pep Guardiola's backroom staff at Manchester City, Arteta returned to the Emirates Stadium and made a promising start to life in management after guiding the north Londoners to FA Cup glory a matter of months later.

However, Arteta has led Arsenal to just 49 wins from 91 matches in charge so far and, having finished eighth in the Premier League standings last term, they are without European football for the first time since 1995.

The Gunners also made the worst start to a season in their 118-year history after suffering a defeat to London rivals Chelsea last month.

They finally grabbed their first points of the campaign when they sealed a 1-0 win over newly-promoted Norwich City at the weekend.

What has Paul Brown said about Arteta?

Journalist Brown believes the Gunners' narrow victory over Norwich could be a catalyst for the north Londoners reversing their early season form.

However, he believes Arteta's in-game instructions are too difficult for players to take on board and could backfire.

Brown told GMS: "I think it certainly could be a turning point because they played a lot better and they've got some players back.

"I've always thought they're a team that is trying to play for Arteta, but I wonder sometimes if he bombards them a little bit too much with instructions. It's a bit Primark Pep for some people.

"I think it would be a bit soon to suggest that this one result is good enough to say they've turned the corner and they're back now."

Have Arsenal contemplated sacking Arteta?

The Gunners have been linked with making a move for former Chelsea and Inter Milan head coach Antonio Conte in recent weeks.

It comes after Conte left Inter by mutual consent just a matter of days after leading the club to the Serie A title for the first time in 11 years last season.

Conte was also in discussions with Arsenal's north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur over potentially being appointed as Jose Mourinho's successor during the summer, but the Italian failed to agree terms with the club.
