Journalist Luke Hatfield has revealed that Wolves had the chance to sign Ruben Dias back in 2019 but failed to meet Benfica's asking-price.

What happened with Dias?

Following their impressive seventh-place finish in their first campaign back in the Premier League, Nuno Espirito Santo was looking to add another centre-back to his squad ahead of their first ever season in the Europa League.

He quickly identified Dias as his primary target after his excellent form made him a regular for the Portugal national team and helped Benfica win the Primeira Liga.

However, in the final few weeks of the window, Wolves ended their pursuit of the centre-back, who had a £57m release-clause, with the two clubs unable to agree a fee for Dias.

Wolves repeated the feat under Santo by finishing seventh once again but could have had one of the world's best centre-backs on their books should the window have panned out differently.

What did Hatfield say about Dias?

Hatfield looked back at an opportunity missed for Wolves, who're suffering defensively this season despite keeping their first clean sheet in 10 Premier League games at Watford on Saturday.

When speaking about their need for another central defender, Hatfield told GIVEMESPORT: "They missed out on Ruben Dias before he moved to Man City.

"He was a player Wolves were interested in and they weren't willing to meet the asking-price. And now you look at it and wonder why because he's worth so much more now."

How has Dias done at Manchester City?

Whilst Dias, who cost the champions £65m last summer, wasn't able to help City end their painful wait for European success, he played a major part in helping Pep Guardiola's men continue their domestic domination.

City kept 19 clean sheets, which saw Ederson claim the Golden Glove, whilst Dias himself won the FWA Footballer of the Year for his outstanding form alongside John Stones in the heart of City's defence.

Dias has continued where he left off during the early stages of this season, with City conceding just once on the opening day at Spurs – keeping clean sheets in each of their last three Premier League outings.
