Preston North End striker Neil Mellor has been named the npower League One player of the month for September.

The 28-year-old netted six goals in four league matches over the course of the month to take his tally to eight in all competitions this season. Preston boss Phil Brown was delighted that his forward's prolific form has been recognised.

He said: "It is a fantastic achievement for Neil. In the first month of the season he was getting used to the new coaching methods and a different management style."

He added: "He took the new methods on board fairly positively and now all of a sudden he has responded in September by scoring six goals in a strong winning team.

"The fact that Iain Hume and Jamie Proctor have been playing alongside him have helped Neil get his chances.

"In terms of finishing, he is one of the best I have ever worked with during my time in the game."
