Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua: Gypsy King slams AJ's boxing record

Tyson Fury has taken a dig at fellow Brit Anthony Joshua, saying that the latter has never fought a top fighter in his prime.

AJ is among the best heavyweight boxers in the world at present and has an impressive record with 24 wins from his 25 fights.

Fury, however, has criticised the former Olympic champion for fighting opponents who are way past their prime.

Whilst speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap, he said: “I do think that the best boxers do fight each other eventually, but it’s not gonna happen when everyone calls for it.

"It only happens when say one boxer’s on the slide and one’s in his prime. Then you get them wanting to fight each other. But you very rarely get two prime fighters fight each other. Because one of them is always a bit wary that they’re gonna lose.

Anthony Joshua’s fought not one heavyweight in his prime.

"He fought Wladimir Klitschko at 42 years old, Kubrat Pulev 40-odd, Alexander Povetkin 40-odd.

"They’re all former good men, back in the early 2000s, late 2000s, but not in 2020-odd. They were good men 10 years ago.”

Fury does have a fair point here when talking about some of Joshua's opponents, but a similar thing applies to him too, at least as far as fighting Klitschko is concerned. The Gypsy King fought the Ukrainian when he was almost 40.

While Joshua has fought several top fighters past their prime, he also had two fights against Andy Ruiz Jr, winning one of them. The 31-year-old will certainly have something to say regarding Fury's comments.

Fury and Joshua were initially scheduled to fight each other in August before an arbitration judge ruled that the former would have to take on Deontay Wilder for a third and, hopefully, final time. The Gypsy King's fight against the Bronze Bomber is on October 9.

Joshua's next bout is against Oleksandr Usyk at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next weekend with his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles on the line.

After both Fury and Joshua complete their respective fights, there's a good chance of a bout between the two taking place.
