Arsenal latest gossip: 24 y/o international tipped to push for Gunners exit in January

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta

Ainsley Maitland-Niles is expected to push for a January move away from Arsenal after seeing a potential switch to Everton blocked last month, according to journalist Paul Brown.

What's the latest news involving Maitland-Niles?

Maitland-Niles was put up for sale by Arsenal before the transfer window even opened for business, with the Gunners reportedly revealing they would be willing to listen to offers of £20million.

The news came after the 24-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at West Bromwich Albion, where he made 15 appearances.

Everton looked to negotiate a loan deal with the option to buy in the final days of the transfer window.

But Arsenal blocked the move, which led to Maitland-Niles taking to social media and posting an extraordinary outburst as he pleaded to leave his current employers due to not feeling wanted.

Gunners head coach Mikel Arteta was unimpressed by Maitland-Niles' public outcry and the England international, who boasts five caps at senior level, was punished by being forced to initially train away from the first-team.

Everton were not Maitland-Niles' only suitors as Watford and Southampton were also interested before the window slammed shut at the end of last month.

What has Paul Brown said about Maitland-Niles?

Brown has tipped Maitland-Niles to look to force a way out of the Emirates Stadium when the transfer window reopens in January.

However, he is unsure as to whether the Gunners will be willing to sanction a switch.

Brown told GMS: "We know he wanted to go to Everton before the deadline and he wasn't allowed.

"I think if he continues not to play and be overlooked for players he clearly thinks he's better than at Arsenal, I can see that coming back up rearing its head again in January.

"Whether they would allow that to happen, I don't know."

How has Maitland-Niles performed this season?

Opportunities have been limited for the Arsenal academy graduate, with him being restricted to just two Premier League appearances this term.

However, it is telling that his only start of the campaign came in the Gunners' first fixture since the midfielder's public outcry - the 1-0 win over Norwich City at the weekend.

Maitland-Niles also made a substitute appearance against West Brom as Arsenal sealed a comfortable 6-0 victory to book their place in the third round of the League Cup. He even claimed an assist on his first return to the Hawthorns since heading back to the Gunners.
