Aston Villa are unlikely to reignite their interest in Harry Winks after Tottenham Hotspur slapped a huge price tag on the midfielder, according to Express & Star reporter Luke Hatfield.

What's the latest news involving Winks?

Winks was on Villa's radar from the early stages of the summer transfer window, with boss Dean Smith keen to strengthen his squad.

However, Villa cooled their interest after Spurs put a £40million valuation on the midfielder.

The hefty asking price, which deterred suitors from lodging a bid, came despite the north Londoners clearly wanting to get Winks off the wage bill after putting him up for sale prior to the new Premier League season getting underway last month.

Respected journalist Fabrizio Romano also claimed Everton were initially courting the 25-year-old, who still has close to three years remaining on his £50,000-per-week contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Winks' fall from grace has come after former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino described Winks as 'perfect' just three years ago.

What has Luke Hatfield said about Winks?

Winks was not the only central midfielder Villa pursued during the summer as they failed with numerous bids for Arsenal's creative ace Emile Smith Rowe and also saw a £25million offer rejected for Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse.

Villa reporter Hatfield believes another bid for Ward-Prowse is more likely to be on the cards when the transfer window reopens in January than Smith agreeing to meet Spurs' asking price for Winks, who won the last of his 10 England caps close to a year ago.

He told GMS: "With Harry Winks, I think £40million is certainly a stretch too far.

"You can make a case for paying £50million for James Ward-Prowse because he is obviously a seasoned England international, has a real set-piece threat and has been fantastic for Southampton.

"Harry Winks has been in and out of that Spurs squad and I don't think it warrants paying that kind of money for him."

How has Winks performed this season?

Winks has failed to make an impression since Nuno Espirito Santo was appointed as Spurs' new head coach following a lengthy managerial search in June.

He has been afforded just two Premier League appearances, with his only start coming as Spurs saw their perfect beginning to the season go up in smoke thanks to a 3-0 hammering by Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Winks has, however, played every minute in the early stages of Spurs' Europa Conference League campaign.
