Lingard was given a warm welcome onto the pitch by the West Ham supporters after spending the second half.

During that loan spell, Lingard scored nine goals in 16 appearances to help West Ham finish the season in a Europa League qualifying berth.

There were plenty of reports linking Lingard with a permanent move back to east London but a deal couldn’t be struck between the two clubs.

Instead, Lingard is expected to play a bit-part role for United this season with plenty of competition for places.

While Lingard was one of the heroes on Sunday, on Tuesday he was very much the villain.

As 10-man United held Young Boys in their Champions League opener, Lingard came off the bench to help preserve the draw. However, he ended up inadvertently putting Young Boys striker, Jordan Siebatcheu, through on goal to win the match in the 95th-minute.

However, after coming off the bench in the 73rd-minute on Sunday afternoon against West Ham, his contribution was far more positive.

Redemption.

You’d think Lingard would celebrate his late winner wildly after what had happened in Switzerland a few days previously but he was very respectful to the club that had given him an opportunity last season.

However, Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo weren’t too happy with Lingard’s celebrations being muted.

They both pushed him towards the United fans in an attempt to make him celebrate.

Lingard didn’t give in, though, and paid his respects to West Ham - although he did raise a smile and give a little fist pump to the away supporters.

We’re sure that, on the inside, Lingard was celebrating wildly as he earned United a crucial three points.
