Who is Clara Tauson?

Tauson has been following in the footsteps of tennis star and compatriot Caroline Wozniacki since a very young age.

At 13, Tauson became the youngest ever female Danish champion, surpassing the record set by a 14-year-old Wozniacki.

Tauson became European Youth Olympic champion in 2017 and European junior champion in 2018, topping the junior world rankings in 2019. Her WTA Tour debut came in the same year.

She made her Grand Slam debut at last year’s French Open, before winning her first WTA title at the Lyon Open in March. Tauson’s victory helped her break into the top 100 in the WTA world standings – she is currently ranked 70th.

The teenage talent was entered into the main draw of the US Open and won her opening match against Clara Burel of France, but she then lost in the second round to world number one Ashleigh Barty.

Why is Clara Tauson the 'original Emma Raducanu'?

There are parallels between Tauson and Emma Raducanu, the 18-year-old US Open winner who made history by becoming the first qualifier, male or female, to earn a Grand Slam title.

Raducanu also became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam title since Virginia Wade in 1977. The youngster made history in style, not dropping a single set on her way to US Open glory.

Tennis journalist Gill Gross pointed out Tauson was the first to pull off a "Raducanu", winning the Lyon Open as a qualifier, and not dropping a single set in the process.

Tauson is also the last person to beat Raducanu, doing so in the final of the Chicago Challenger last month. In fact, Tauson is the only player to overcome Raducanu in her last 15 matches.

With Tauson and Raducanu both skyrocketing up the WTA rankings, tennis fans will be hoping to watch more match-ups between the two teenage sensations in the coming years.
