Arsenal news: Big update on Edu's future emerges after spending £156.8m this summer

Arsenal technical director Edu

Edu is "breathing a sigh of relief" because his job as Arsenal's technical director is safe following a big-spending summer transfer window, according to journalist Paul Brown.

Who did Arsenal spend big on before last month's deadline?

Edu, who was appointed as Arsenal's technical director two years ago, led the Gunners on a spending spree as they parted with £156.8million - more than any other Premier League club - before the window slammed shut.

Arsenal opted to spend significant sums after enduring a disappointing campaign which means the north Londoners are not competing in Europe for the first time since 1995.

The Gunners welcomed England international defender Ben White to the Emirates Stadium after agreeing a £50million fee with Brighton & Hove Albion, while Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard sealed his permanent return for an initial sum of £30million.

Arsenal could part with a similar amount after persuading Championship side Sheffield United to sell goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and Takehiro Tomiyasu cost £19.8million on deadline day.

Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares also joined in the early stages of the transfer window.

What has Paul Brown said about Edu?

Journalist Brown believes Edu cannot be judged in a short period of time due to the vast amounts of money spent, but concedes the pressure will be on if the new signings do not pay off.

He told GMS: "I think if a lot of the new signings very quickly go off the boil in the next few weeks and look like duds then it's almost certain he will come under pressure. But I think, for the moment, he's safe as houses.

"He's a relatively new appointment and you can see from the kind of signings they made that they're building for the future.

"I don't think you let someone like Edu do that if that hasn't come right from the top from the Kroenkes.

"I think the strategy has been agreed with all parties. I think they know that they needed to make the squad younger and build something for the future.

"I think you can really only judge whether that's been successful or not in the next few years and that's something that Edu is probably breathing a sigh of relief over because it means he won't be judged too quickly."

Has Edu's job come under threat?

Former Arsenal ace Marc Overmars was keen to be appointed as the club's technical director before Edu got the gig in 2019.

According to talkSPORT, via the Mirror, Ray Parlour has been contacted by Overmars with his former team-mate saying he still has his eyes on the job.

Edu is reportedly under increasing pressure after spending more than £300million on fresh faces since his arrival.
