Manchester United continued their impressive start to the 2021-22 campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over West Ham on Sunday afternoon. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side survived a huge scare at the end of the match, thanks to their goalkeeper David de Gea.Jesse Lingard thought he’d sealed all three points for the Red Devils with a superb goal in the 89th minute, but referee Martin Atkinson awarded West Ham a dramatic late penalty when Luke Shaw blocked Andriy Yarmolenko’s cross with his arm inside the box. When Atkinson pointed to the spot after reviewing the footage on his pitch-side monitor, Solskjaer was visibly fuming and channelled his inner Jose Mourinho with his reaction. The United boss - who is usually so cool, calm and collected - was seen in footage broadcast on Match of the Day 2 picking up a plastic water bottle and smashing it to the ground before scowling.

Solskjaer’s surprise touchline antics brought back memories of Mourinho throwing a crate of water bottles at Old Trafford after Marouane Fellaini scored a late winner for Man Utd against Young Boys in the Champions League back in 2018.

De Gea then saved Mark Noble's penalty

However, Solskjaer’s mood completely changed minutes later.

West Ham boss David Moyes sent on the experienced Mark Noble to take the penalty, only for the plan to backfire when the veteran midfielder’s spot-kick was saved by De Gea.

You could tell from the post-match celebrations that United’s players, coaching staff and supporters knew this was a huge, confidence-boosting victory.

Dropping two points in that manner would have been a massive blow for the Red Devils, but De Gea’s dramatic penalty save ensured that United stay joint top of the Premier League table alongside Chelsea and Liverpool.
