For now, the curse of the Manchester United No.7 shirt appears to be over. While we may well put too much stock into the mythology in what Angel Di Maria has described as 'just a shirt', there is little doubt that this particular squad number is amongst the most iconic in sport. Indeed, part of the mystique is it appears way heavy on some players' shoulders, while others seem to embrace the history. All of that makes Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Manchester United even more fascinating. GiveawayENTER GIVEAWAYArguably the most famous incumbent of the No.7 during his first run at Old Trafford between 2003 and 2009, the Portuguese reclaimed the shirt he is most synonymous with from Edinson Cavani last month. Although there may well be valid questions as to whether or not signing Ronaldo was the wisest move long-term, the 36-year-old's goalscoring form simply cannot be questioned. Four goals in his opening three games prove that this is still a man capable of racking up the kind of numbers that make social media explode and, once again, that he is not one to be overawed by the No.7. In fact, Ronaldo has already scored as many times in the Premier League as Di Maria and Alexis Sanchez (two of the shirt's biggest flops) managed together. Granted, that is only three times but indicative of the struggles United have endured in that department over the years.

Both the Argentine and the Chilean were huge names upon arrival but, for a myriad of reasons, failed to adapt at the Theatre of Dreams, costing the club a huge amount of time, money and effort.

While it remains to be seen if Ronaldo can help deliver the collective success United are desperate for, the early signs are certainly promising.

Clearly, the tests will come when the powerhouses of the Premier League square off against him but, for now, United are no longer at sixes and sevens in this department.
