Lionel Messi was making his home debut as the Argentine started alongside Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in attack.

But just like against Club Brugge in the Champions League, the trio didn’t exactly click.

In fact, it was Lyon who took the lead in the second half.

Their lead lasted 12 minutes as Neymar won himself a penalty and stepped up to equalise with 25 minutes remaining.

Which city was Lionel Messi born and raised?

PSG went in search of a winner but, with 15 minutes remaining, Mauricio Pochettino dropped a bombshell by substituted Messi for Achraf Hakimi. It was a substitution that got football fans around the world talking.

Why would you bring off arguably the greatest player to have ever played the game when you’re in desperate need of a winner?

What the reasons, Messi didn’t appear too happy with many accusing him of rejecting Pochettino’s handshake as he trudged off the pitch.

He didn’t look too happy when he took his place on the substitutes bench either.

In fact, he didn’t even appear too delighted when another substitute and compatriot, Mauro Icardi, won the match for PSG deep into injury-time.

Messi didn’t even seem to be watching as Mbappe crossed the ball into Icardi to earn all three points for his side.

As the other members on the bench around him jumped up and celebrated the winner, it took Messi several seconds to rise from his seat.

He then clapped politely before being the first to sit down.

After the match, Pochettino defended his decision to bring Messi off.

"Everyone knows we have great players on the team," Pochettino said.

"We have a very rich squad of 35 players. Then we have to make choices.  With the 11 who must start. And then we have to make decisions during the game.

“Sometimes these choices pay off and sometimes they don't. But that's why we're standing in front of the bench thinking about what to do. And those decisions that you have to make, whether things go well or not. Whether you like it or not."
