Looking back on week 2 in the NFL

The GOAT Breaks More Records!

Tom Brady

Tom Brady continues to set the standard for everyone else to chase. On Sunday he zipped in 5 touchdown passes as Tampa Bay routed the Atlanta Falcons 48-25.

At 44 years old he continues to break records! The Buccaneers have now scored at least 30 points and won each of their last 9 games, including last season’s playoffs – the longest such streak in NFL history.

Brady himself has thrown 9 touchdown passes through the first 2 weeks of this season. Prior to this year, he’d never thrown more than 7 in his team’s first 2 games. Add into the mix, the return to form of Rob Gronkowski – the tight end has caught 4 of those TD passes this season – and the Super Bowl champions appear to be formidable opponents once again!

Lamar Takes Down Mahomes

Lamar Jackson

When we talk about the future of the NFL, will there be a true rivalry or will it be Patrick Mahomes………and everyone else? On Sunday Night Football we got our answer in one of the great prim-time games.

Baltimore QB Lamar Jackson got his first victory over Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, thanks to a come from behind win. The manner of his success makes it even more impressive – overcoming 2 interceptions and an 11 point 3rdquarter deficit to get the Ravens season up and running.

Jackson was impressive both with his arm and his legs – becoming the first QB in NFL history to throw for over 200 yards, rush for over 100 yards and rush for 2 touchdowns in a regular season game. It was a performance which also helped to inflict Patrick Mahomes first ever NFL defeat in the month of September.

Raiders – Time To Get Excited!

Carr

The last two decades have been barren for Raider nation but could this be the year it all changes?

In back-to-back weeks, they’ve taken down the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers with QB Derek Carr, outstanding!

Under head coach, John Gruden, Carr has long been the subject of discussion at the quarterback position but he’s fast silencing his critics. Despite being underdogs in each of the first two games he’s put this team on his arm, throwing for at least 375 yards and two touchdowns – only the 5th QB in the Super Bowl era to do so (Bledsoe, Brady, Fitzpatrick and Mahomes).

The Raiders have set out their stall as a team to be feared once again. One of only two teams in the AFC with a perfect 2-0 record, they now sit ahead of AFC West rivals, Kansas City Chiefs in the division.

Titans Overcome Seattle’s 12th Man

Derrick Henry

You sensed this was a defining moment in Tennessee’s season. Already humbled by the Cardinals in week 1, now trailing by 14 points in the 4th quarter, in Seattle and with Seahawks’ fans at their most raucous.

The Titans flexed their muscle to take down Seattle in an overtime win and they did it largely on the back of workhorse, Derrick Henry.

Through the first game and a half this season, the Titans running back had been largely anonymous but in the second half of Sunday’s game, he stormed into life – trampling over Seattle defenders as he racked up over 200 scrimmage yards and scored 3 touchdowns. It was a big win, on the road, in an intimidating atmosphere and lays out the Titans’ credentials as playoff contenders once again.

Mac Overcomes Zach in Battle of Rookie QBs

Mac Jones

Two quarterbacks, playing only their second games in the NFL met this weekend and it was Mac Jones who prevailed with the New England Patriots.

Zach Wilson was the second player selected in this year’s NFL Draft by the New York Jets, Mac Jones had to wait until New England called his name at 15 but on this showing, Jones may have got the better deal.

Jones wasn’t spectacular, he didn’t need to be! Zach Wilson threw four interceptions – 3 before half-time. He was sacked 4 times. The magnitude of the challenge facing the Jets new signal caller must now be dawning on him as the team looks set for another tough season.

For Mac Jones and the Patriots, it’s a first win this year but sterner tests await with games against the Saints and then the return of Tom Brady and the Buccaneers to Foxborough in week 4.
