Romeo Beckham, the second son of footballing icon David Beckham, made his professional debut on Sunday evening.

The 19-year-old turned out for Fort Lauderdale CF - the reserve team of the Inter Miami franchise owned by his father - as they took on South Georgia Tormenta in what is essentially the third-tier of the game in the United States.

Lining up on the right wing, just as his dad did on so many occasions in his own career, Romeo played 79 minutes of the match, which ended in a 2-2 draw. 

Judging by fan reaction to a highlights package of his performance, though, the similarity in their position might well be where comparisons between Romeo and his father end.

The compilation, posted by Sky Sports on social media, lasts just 28 seconds and features the youngster whipping in two decidedly average crosses, both of which are claimed easily by the opposition goalkeeper. He is then shown exiting the field, having been substituted.

Granted, it's far from a full breakdown of his performance over the time he spent on the pitch, but you have to believe that if better moments had been available, then they would have been included.

This hasn't been lost on fans on social media, who were pretty damning in their assessment of the youngster's professional bow.

One fan asked: "He played 79 mins and that’s the best you could find for highlights?"

"It doesn't run in the family," read a first review of Romeo's performance.

Another user declared: "Two crosses. What a performance. Wouldn’t make the Dog and Duck XI if he wasn’t Beckham's son."

A further comment joked: "His only highlights were two poor crosses into the box that the keeper caught... when do Newcastle sign him?"

"Imagine looking bang average in the MLS reserve league," pointed out a final reply.

In fairness to Romeo, this was his first genuine matchday experience - and he probably shouldn't be judged so harshly for it. As he finds his feet in Florida, he has an ally in Phil Neville's son, Harvey, who also recently joined Fort Lauderdale after leaving Manchester United.

In any case, even if Romeo doesn't light up the USL League One with his performances on the pitch, his mere presence will surely bring more eyes to the competition than it has ever had before.
