Journalist Stuart Hodge is surprised that Todd Cantwell has been left out of the starting XI by Daniel Farke in recent weeks.

What's the latest news with Cantwell?

After playing a key part in Norwich's promotion back to the Premier League last term, Cantwell was unsurprisingly straight into the line-up for their return against Liverpool on the opening day.

He then kept his place for the next two games before the international break against Manchester City and Leicester, although he was unable to provide any goals or assists as Norwich suffered three straight defeats.

But following the return of Premier League football earlier this month, Cantwell was overlooked by Farke for the trip to Arsenal last weekend and was left on the bench against Watford on Saturday.

He played 29 and 21 minutes respectively in those two matches but didn't have enough time to prevent the Canaries from losing each of their opening five Premier League fixtures.

It remains early days in the season, but Norwich already look to be facing a lost battle in their fight for survival and sit rock-bottom having failed to collect a single point.

But after suffering two consecutive defeats without £19.8m-rated man, the attacking midfielder will be hoping that another opportunity will come when the Canaries face another tough-looking trip to Everton this weekend.

Hodge himself has been left confused by Cantwell's recent omission.

What did Hodge say about Cantwell?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "He doesn't know his best team yet and that is the key thing. But Todd Cantwell not starting is a big surprise."

Should Cantwell be recalled?

Cantwell has been unfairly treated here. Behind Teemu Pukki, he remains Norwich's biggest goal threat, so to drop him in two more winnable games than their opening three was a shock decision.

Cantwell's WhoScored rating this season has been a miserly 6.34, which is the 13th best in the Norwich squad. However, he hasn't exactly been outperformed by his teammates, with just one of the 12 above him having a higher rating than seven, and that was goalkeeper Mathias Normann following his performance in the defeat to Watford.

It's quite clearly been a tough start to the season for Norwich, and avoiding relegation is likely to be an uphill task, but for them to have any chance, they need an in-form Cantwell in their team.
