NWSL: Bethany Balcer reveals damning prize she received for Best Young Player

Bethany Balcer

Bethany Balcer is one of the National Women's Soccer League's most notable talents.

It took the forward until she was 22 to make her top tier debut but she certainly made it count.

After being drafted into the Seattle Reign team in 2019, Balcer made 24 appearances and scored six goals – finishing the season as her side's top scorer.

As a result of her stellar debut campaign, Reign's young trailblazer was awarded the NWSL Rookie of the Year – taking the place of Imani Dorsey as holder of the award, who won the accolade the year before with Sky Blue.

However, despite how impressive the title looks on paper, Balcer has revealed that was pretty much where it ended.

The 24-year-old posted a tweet with damning evidence of how little the NWSL players are rewarded for their achievements.

"Why is equal pay important?" Balcer wrote. "I got a $50 gift card to Chipotle for winning Rookie of the Year in 2019. That's it.

"We need a CBA in this league and we need to move forward, not backwards."

She then revealed the gift card was not issued by the NWSL itself, but by the league's PA, who sent the voucher along with the instruction to "enjoy some burritos."

More than 350 people have responded to Balcer's tweet, with the argument of equal pay unsurprisingly dividing the conversation.

But the vast majority are in Balcer's corner and believe NWSL players should be given a lot more recognition for their success.

The OL Reign star has called for the NWSL to introduce a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), a written contract between an employer and a trade union – something that is in place for their male counterparts in Major League Soccer.

Equal pay continues to be a hot topic in the States but there was a huge breakthrough recently when the US Soccer Federation offered identical contract proposals to the men's and women's national teams.

But it appears there is still a long way to go on the domestic stage after Balcer's Twitter bombshell.
