Wolves team news: Lage urged to make key decision on £67k p/w star ahead of Spurs clash

Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Bruno Lage

Bruno Lage should hand Willy Boly his first appearance of the season when Wolverhampton Wanderers do battle with Tottenham Hotspur in the third round of the League Cup tonight, according to Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

What’s the latest news involving Boly?

Since joining Wolves, initially on loan from Portuguese side Porto in 2017, Boly has gone on to make 136 appearances for the Molineux-based club.

However, the central defender has endured a frustrating start to Bruno Lage’s reign and failed to make a single appearance so far.

He could be in line for a maiden appearance under Lage, who was appointed as Wolves’ head coach in June, when Spurs head to Molineux with a place in the fourth round of the League Cup up for grabs tonight.

Incidentally, Boly was wanted by the north London club during the summer transfer window.

It comes after Nuno Espirito Santo mutually agreed to part company with Wolves and went on to be installed as Spurs’ new head coach in the summer.

However, Boly failed to seal a move away before the deadline passed and his contract, worth £67,308-per-week, still has just shy of two years remaining.

What has Luke Hatfield said about Boly?

Boly has not been in action at club level since the final day of last season but featured for Ivory Coast in a World Cup qualifier against Cameroon earlier this month.

Hatfield has urged Lage to bring Boly back into the fold and offer the 30-year-old an extended run in the team, starting tonight.

The journalist told GMS: “I’d like to see Willy Boly brought back in. I think he’s a really good defender when he’s on his game but he needs a consistent run.

“It wasn’t too long ago that we were saying Willy Boly is probably the best centre-back outside of the top six.

“He’s got that quality in him and I’d like to see him back in the fold.”

Which Wolves manager signed Pedro Neto?

Who has been in Wolves’ defence during Boly’s absence?

Lage has been consistent in his team selection so far this season, with Conor Coady, Max Kilman and Romain Saiss making up a three-man central defence in all six of Wolves’ fixtures so far.

But it has not worked out particularly well, with Wolves losing four of those six encounters and keeping only two clean sheets.

As a result, Wolves have made a disappointing start to the campaign and are just a point outside of the Premier League drop zone.
