Aston Villa are unhappy with the chaos which unfolded while Emiliano Martinez and Emiliano Buendia were on international duty, according to Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

What happened during the international break?

Villa gave Martinez and Buendia permission to join up with their Argentina team-mates for World Cup qualifying clashes with Venezuela and Brazil during the international break earlier this month.

It came after Premier League clubs had unanimously voted against releasing players for internationals in Covid-19 red-list countries less than a week earlier.

Tottenham Hotspur duo Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso also headed to South America without Spurs head coach Nuno Espirito Santo's approval.

But it led to a farcical situation in Sao Paulo as, just seven minutes into the clash between Brazil and Argentina, Brazilian health officials walked onto the pitch and halted proceedings as they objected to Martinez, Romero and Lo Celso being involved and the trio should not have been playing after breaking quarantine rules.

Fifa have since opened an investigation following the early abandonment.

What has Luke Hatfield said about the situation?

Villa captain Tyrone Mings took to social media to claim his employers had come up with a "perfectly reasonable compromise" to allow Martinez and Buendia to represent their country during the international break.

However, Hatfield believes the club are still incensed by the on-field fiasco in Brazil.

He told GMS: "Even Tyrone Mings came out and kind of agreed with the decision to let them go and play the two games.

"They came to an agreement to play two and then come back to Europe before the third game against Bolivia.

"Obviously, the way things went, I don't think Villa were happy and I don't think the players were happy with what happened in Brazil either.

"But, ultimately, it was a decision that was agreed upon between the players in the club and backed up by the captain."

What has happened since the chaos?

Martinez and Buendia did not head straight back to Villa Park after their time with Argentina and instead flew to Croatia, where they trained, in order to avoid a 10-day quarantine period.

The Argentinian duo were forced to miss the Premier League clash with Chelsea, Villa's first encounter after the international break, due to heading to a red-list country.

Martinez returned to Villa boss Dean Smith's starting line-up for the win over Everton seven days later, while Buendia was an unused substitute.
