Journalist Luke Hatfield reckons that Tyrone Mings would play for a top-six club if he didn't make as many mistakes.

How has Mings performed for Villa?

Mings has been an outstanding servant since initially joining on loan during their promotion-winning campaign three years ago and then permanently at the end of that season.

The central defender, who was recently named as club captain following the departure of Jack Grealish, has missed just eight Premier League games since Villa returned to the top-flight and has been a key figure at the heart of Dean Smith's back-four.

Mings has made an unconvincing start to this season, though, with his WhoScored rating of 6.78, which puts him ninth out of all Villa players, evidence of that.

He helped the Villa Park outfit keep their first clean sheet of the season against Everton on Saturday, but that came after Mings made a costly error in the recent defeat at Chelsea when his back-pass was intercepted and allowed Mateo Kovacic to double the Blues' lead.

That came after Mings was involved in a similar incident against Fulham back in April when another under-hit back-pass saw Aleksander Mitrovic nip in and score that day.

Despite his mistakes, the defender is still heavily involved with England, but Hatfield reckons that Mings could become a top-six player should he cut those out.

What did Hatfield say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "He's the type of player and person that will thrive on pressure. There is an argument to be made that Mings makes one or two more mistakes than he should do at Premier League level.

"But ultimately, he's been a fantastic player for Villa since he joined. And if he didn't make those mistakes, you could argue that he would be at a top-six club, because I think he's that good."

Is Mings good enough to make the step up?

Mings showed at the Euro's that he's good enough to do it on the big stage. But whilst he has proven himself as an excellent defender, his ball playing ability isn't the best.

Should he want to sign for a top-six club that dominate possession, he would need to improve with his feet and know when to make certain passes, to avoid the two mistakes mentioned above from happening.
