The European club football landscape was well and truly flipped on its head over the summer.

Lionel Messi's never ending honeymoon at Barcelona came to a shuddering halt with the club unable to register him under a new contract, forcing him to seek pastures new in Paris.

Only days later, Cristiano Ronaldo made the seismic switch back to his beloved Manchester United, sending fans into meltdown.

At the time of writing, Ronaldo's move looks to be going far better than Messi's, with the Portuguese superstar already scoring four times for the Red Devils.

Messi, meanwhile, has struggled to make a mark in France, going goalless in his first three appearances for PSG.

However, while these two global household names are easily the greatest footballers to have ever lived, they are also incredibly valuable commercial assets off of it.

While Messi's performances on the pitch have been underwhelming so far, the amount of money he has brought into the club through shirt sales has been quite ridiculous.

Even NBA superstar Michael Jordan has managed to make a killing off of Messi's move.

Ronaldo, however, then went and dwarfed Messi's numbers, with shirts bearing the 36-year-old's name making an eye-watering £32.5 million in just 12 hours after going on sale.

Such heady numbers are not the case for every footballer, however - a lesson a certain Marten de Roon learned the hard way.

In a brilliantly funny clip uploaded to Twitter, the Atalanta star pokes fun at himself after claiming he would both pay for and sign the shirts of the first three fans to buy a jersey with his name on it in the club shop.

The video, captioned with "I bet Messi never has to deal with this", then shows De Room restlessly waiting in the shop for a moment that would simply never come.

Brilliant.

While it's all definitely tongue-in-cheek, you can see why the video has been shown so much love online.

Fans love it when a footballer can have a laugh at himself and De Roon has certainly done just that with his viral clip.

After today, however, you can be sure there will be a big ol' order for De Roon's number 15 shirt at the club.

In fact, it could prove to be an absolute marketing worldie for all involved.
