Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong picked up an incredibly harsh red card vs Cadiz

Was it a harsh call by the referee?

Everything just seems to be going wrong for Barcelona right now.

The team are really struggling in the post-Lionel Messi era and it's hard to see manager Ronald Koeman staying in the job much longer.

Barcelona's 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week showed just how far behind the best teams in Europe they are these days.

The Blaugrana are finding it very tough in La Liga this season and could only muster a 0-0 draw away at Cadiz on Thursday evening.

That result means that Barcelona are currently seventh in the table, a position that they most certainly do not want to be in.

But while a draw was far from an ideal result for Koeman's side, it could have been far worse.

In the second half of the match versus Cadiz, midfielder Frenkie de Jong - who's been one of the team's few good performers in 2021/22 - was sent off.

The Dutchman picked up two yellow cards in the space of four minutes and both of the calls were incredibly harsh.

De Jong's tackle that resulted in a red card being brandished in his direction was probably not even a foul.

The former Ajax man took a heavy touch and stretched to retrieve the ball. After getting a toe to it, he did make contact with a Cadiz player, but it was far from dangerous play.

However, the referee saw it differently and deemed that the challenge was worthy of second yellow card.

Unsurprisingly, the players and Koeman were fuming...

On the face of it, the decision from the referee looks an incredibly poor one.

De Jong made clear contact with the ball and even pulled out of the tackle in order to not potentially injure the opponent.

The 24-year-old will now miss the team's home match against Levante on the weekend and his absence will certainly be noticeable.

Koeman will also miss that game, as he was sent off in stoppage-time during the 0-0 draw with Cadiz.

Who'd want to be a Barcelona fan right now, eh?
