Journalist Tom Barclay reckons that Steve Cooper has only taken the Nottingham Forest job because they were no Premier League roles available.

What happened with Cooper this summer?

Despite two successful campaigns with Swansea, the second of which ended in play-off final heartache to Brentford last May, Cooper left the Liberty Stadium by mutual consent just weeks before the start of the new Championship season.

The 41-year-old was then linked with the job at Crystal Palace after Roy Hodgson stepped down, but the Eagles opted to appoint Patrick Vieira as their new manager.

It meant that Cooper started the season without a club, but it took little time for him to return to the dugout.

Soon after Chris Hughton was sacked following Forest's winless start, the former England Under-17 manager was named as his replacement.

But Barclay reckons that Cooper only took the job because there was a lack of top-flight interest.

He told GIVEMESPORT: "I guess that the fact he's opted for Forest, which is obviously a massive club, but what is it? 14 managers in 11 years, it's a risk from his point of view. It suggests that the Premier League options that he was hoping for weren't available."

How is Cooper expected to do at Forest?

Whilst Forest are still inside the relegation-zone, Cooper should inherit a squad that have their tails up following their victory at Huddersfield Town last weekend.

But he has a massive job on his hands overall. Forest have sacked a ludicrous number of managers since they were last in the Premier League, and therefore Cooper will be hoping he can put a stop to that trend and finally get the City Ground outfit back to where they should be.

But with just one victory from eight league matches, his short-term objectives are getting the club away from danger and making sure they don't get dragged into a dogfight.
