With Extreme Rules right around the corner, let's take a look at one of the most iconic and memorable moments in the history of the pay-per-view.

At the Extreme Rules on May 22, 2016, Roman Reigns successfully defended his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against AJ Styles in a fantastic Extreme Rules match.

After the match, Seth Rollins made his shock return to WWE from a horror knee injury, appearing for the first time since November 2015.

To close out the show, Seth Rollins hit Roman Reigns with a Pedigree, holding the WWE World Heavyweight aloft as the show went off the air.

In November 2015 during a match with Kane as part of the UK tour, Seth Rollins tore his ACL, MCL and medial meniscus in a horror knee injury that would keep him out of the ring for close to seven months.

However, Rollins was now cleared to return and was gunning for Roman Reigns, actually defeating his former stablemate to capture the WWE Championship at Money in the Bank the month after.

Rollins didn't end the night as WWE Champion, however. Dean Ambrose, who had won the Money in the Bank ladder match earlier in the night, cashed in his briefcase on Rollins to close out the show.

This lead to a triple threat match between Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, the three members of The Shield, in July 2016 at Battleground. 

The match was won by Dean Ambrose, who would take the WWE Championship to SmackDown in that month's draft, while Rollins and Reigns remained on Monday Night Raw.

Seth Rollins is not slated to wrestle at Extreme Rules on September 26, while Roman Reigns will be defending his Universal Championship against 'The Demon' Finn Balor on the show.
