Finn Balor looks to become a two-time Universal Champion on Sunday night, when 'The Demon' challenges Roman Reigns at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view.

At the SummerSlam pay-per-view event on August 21, 2016, Finn Balor defeated Seth Rollins to become the first-ever Universal Champion.

The title was introduced by Mick Foley and Stephanie McMahon following the WWE Draft, with Dean Ambrose taking the WWE Championship over to SmackDown.

After beatKevin Owens, Rusev and Cesaro in a four-way match on the July 25 WWE Raw, Finn Balor defeated Roman Reigns in the show's main event to earn a title match with Seth Rollins.

The match at SummerSlam, which was the first time Finn Balor bring out his Demon gimmick for a match on the main roster, saw the Irishman pin Seth Rollins to win the Universal Championship.

The night should have been one of the best in Finn Balor's career, a Buckle Bomb into the barricade left the former NXT Champion with a labrum tear in his shoulder that required surgery.

As such, Balor appeared on the August 22 episode of Monday Night Raw the following night alongside Mick Foley and Stephanie McMahon where he vacated the Universal Championship.

Finn Balor WWE SummerSlam

WWE ended up putting on a four-way match to determine the new Universal Champion the following week, with Kevin Owens defeating Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Big Cass to win the title.

It would take Finn Balor just shy of two years to receive another Universal Championship match, being granted a title match by Roman Reigns on the August 20 episode of Raw in 2018.

As noted, Finn Balor is hoping to become a two-time Universal Champion at Extreme Rules this weekend, when he takes on the aforementioned Roman Reigns.

You can watch Sunday night's Extreme Rules pay-per-view live in the US on Peacock, and in other international markets on the WWE Network.
