Video footage has emerged of the Portland Thorns team bus being caught on fire, ahead of the team’s game this weekend against the Chicago Red Stars.Christine Sinclair, who captains the Thorns as well as the Canadian national team, posted a video on her TikTok account, showing the coach in flames and engulfed by smoke.Initially, there were concerns about the wellbeing of those on board, but the Thorns have now confirmed everybody is fine and well.Speaking on the club’s official Twitter account they wrote: “Hi everyone! As you may have seen, our bus caught on fire in Chicago. Thankfully, no players or staff were injured. We appreciate all the concern! “Portland’s players seemingly saw the funny side of the situation as well. Goalkeeper Bella Bixby responded to the club’s message by saying “When building a bonfire gets outta hand.”ENTER GIVEAWAYENTER GIVEAWAYSinclair also found the circumstances amusing, captioning her post: “We might be late to our game.”While many players appeared to make light of the incident, Thorns owner and CEO Merritt Paulson said she was just glad everyone was ok.“We have been en fuego all season… but this is a step too far. So grateful everyone is ok. Genuinely scary situation.”It remains unclear at this stage whether the Thorns game against the Red Stars will go ahead this weekend.

If the match does go ahead as planned, Portland will look to extend their advantage at the top of the NWSL.

Mark Parsons’ team are six points clear of OL Reign in second place, with a game in hand of their rivals. With just six matches to go this season, victory in Chicago would go a long way to securing their third NWSL title and a league and cup double this year.

The Red Stars, meanwhile, sit fifth in the table, having won seven of their 19 games so far. The team has struggled for goals this year, though they are led by the impressive Mallory Pugh. A win against the Thorns could see them leapfrog the Orlando Pride into fourth place.

The match is scheduled to take place at 01:00 BST this Sunday.
