Brighton & Hove Albion full-back Tariq Lamptey is "one of the most exciting talents in English football", according to journalist Tom Barclay.

What's the latest news involving Lamptey?

Lamptey made his long-awaited return from injury in midweek, playing 45 minutes in Brighton's League Cup third round victory over Championship side Swansea City.

It was the 20-year-old's first involvement since the Seagulls' goalless draw with Fulham, where Lamptey sustained a hamstring problem, before Christmas.

Lamptey was close to making his comeback prior to the end of last season but suffered what proved to be a long-term setback in his recovery.

Following Lamptey's first appearance in more than nine months, Brighton boss Graham Potter praised the full-back and confirmed only keeping him on the pitch for the first half was a pre-match plan.

Lamptey, who joined his current employers from Chelsea in January 2020 and went on to become a crucial part of Potter's plans as he racked up 19 appearances before sustaining the hamstring injury, was also an unused substitute in last weekend's win over Leicester City.

What has Tom Barclay said about Lamptey?

Barclay has no doubt that Lamptey will get back to his best form after recovering from the first long-term setback of his burgeoning career.

He also feels the 20-year-old could end up working his way into Gareth Southgate's future England plans despite stiff competition for the Three Lions' right-back slot.

Barclay told GMS: "I don't know if there is a ceiling to his talent.

"He could just be so good because he's a really good footballer as well as an absolute physical athlete.

"He's one of the most exciting talents in English football.

"If it weren't for the fact that we've got so many good right-backs, he would probably be closer to that senior squad."

Who stands between Lamptey and an England call-up?

England have so many outstanding right-backs that boss Southgate initially opted to include four in his Euro 2020 squad.

Although Trent Alexander-Arnold was forced to drop out through injury, the Liverpool man returned to the fold during the international break earlier this month.

Manchester City's Kyle Walker now has 63 caps to his name and claimed the right-back spot in the World Cup qualifying clashes with Hungary and Poland a matter of weeks ago.

Kieran Trippier boasts 34 caps, although a large number of those appearances have come on the opposite side of England's back four, and Reece James has worked his way into Southgate's plans since making his international debut last year.
