Liverpool fans are emphatically in favour of the Reds negotiating their own overseas TV rights deals, according to a poll conducted by GiveMeFootball.

Of the thousands of votes cast, a staggering 81 percent were supportive of chief executive Ian Ayre's assertion that the most high-profile clubs in the Barclays Premier League should undertake TV negotiations themselves.

Only 12 percent disagreed with Ayre, which reinforces the supposed popularity of the proposal among many Liverpool supporters.

The league's broadcast rights outside of the UK are currently sold in a joint package worth £3.2 million and is shared equally among the 20 clubs.

However, Ayre claims that, due to Liverpool's superior popularity overseas compared most other sides in the top flight, they deserve to discuss the sale of their own rights.

This model is used in Spain, where the earnings of Real Madrid and Barcelona dwarf those of the rest of the sides in La Liga.

However, Liverpool are likely to struggle to win support for this proposal, and Arsenal and Chelsea have both on Thursday stated their support for the current process.

“The stability the Premier League has in terms of revenue sharing is, in my view, one of the strengths of the league," Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis told The Sun.

“If we look at Spain then their issues, particularly in this economic climate, are exacerbated by the fact they do not have solidarity.

“I think it is placing owners of Spanish clubs under tremendous pressure and is damaging the game there.”

Meanwhile, a Chelsea spokesman told The Guardian: “We are supportive of the Premier League on this and want to continue with the way they sell TV rights collectively."
