Aston Villa latest news: "Promising young" Villans talent compared to Wesley

Wesley embraces his Aston Villa teammate during his time at the club

Journalist Luke Hatfield believes that Aston Villa strikers Keinan Davis and Wesley possess similar skillsets.

What is happening with Davis and Wesley at the moment?

After making 15 top-flight appearances for Villa last term, Davis was set to secure a loan move to Stoke in the summer, only for an injury to scupper his chances of a transfer.

Meanwhile, Wesley, who played just three times in 2020/21 after missing the majority of the campaign with a serious knee injury, did complete a loan switch to Club Brugge last month, and is due to return to Villa Park next June.

What did Hatfield say about Davis and Wesley?

The duo have certainly had their fair share of bad luck in terms of injury setbacks, and Hatfield does not feel that the similarities end there for Davis and Wesley.

He has claimed that the two players offer Villa comparable qualities in attack, although only one of them may get to show the Villa faithful their potential this season.

When assessing Dean Smith's forward options, Hatfield told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s got Keinan Davis as well, who’s a promising young player, albeit he hasn’t brought too many goals and is currently injured. But, he plays in a similar kind of style I think, he’s a big physical lad, likes to hold the ball up. And I think that’s what Villa kind of wanted to see from Wesley with maybe a bit more goal production.”

Can Davis make an impact at Villa this season?

Wesley struggled to establish himself at Villa in his two seasons at the club, although admittedly his stay was badly disrupted by a long-term injury. Davis may be concerned that he could be heading down a similar path to the Brazilian attacker.

He was originally ruled out for two months at the start of August, meaning that he should be available again soon, but it may take him a while to get back up to speed.

Which of the following Aston Villa players didn't score in the club's 7-2 victory over Liverpool last season?

Even when he is fully-fit, it is hard to imagine that he will be above either Ollie Watkins or Danny Ings in the pecking order, and with Villa now out of the Carabao Cup, it is not clear as to when Davis will get the chance to prove himself.

Then again, the 6 foot 3 striker does offer something different to Villa's other forwards. His ability to link the play up with his back to goal is a useful asset to have, and if things aren't working with Watkins and Ings, Davis could provide Smith with a Plan B in the final third of the pitch.
