Journalist Liam Kennedy reckons that Dwight Gayle should have been sold by Newcastle this summer.
What happened with Gayle?
After a limited amount of game-time under Steve Bruce last season, it looked like the English striker would be moved on along with Andy Carroll this summer.
Gayle made 20 appearances in all competitions but made just a handful of Premier League starts and has never really been seen as a key part of Bruce's plans.
His frustrations have continued into this season having been an unused substitute in the Mapgies' opening five matches – with his only minutes coming against Burnley in the Carabao Cup.
Despite his lack of first-team involvement, with just 12 months left on his deal, Gayle signed fresh terms earlier this summer despite it looking for long periods as though he would leave the club.
Kennedy believes that Gayle staying at the club was a poor move from Newcastle, with the striker unlikely to play much before January, especially with the Magpies already out of the EFL Cup.

He told GIVEMESPORT: "Ultimately, Dwight Gayle should have been let go. I think they anticipated that somebody may have come in with a decent bid from the Championship. As we know, the Championship didn't really materialise.
"There wasn't a lot of money changed hands, even at the top of the division. I think Dwight Gayle would have moved on, but it just never happened for him. And ultimately, it was a game of chess, but it was a really poor strategic move from Newcastle. They've pushed themselves into a corner."
Should Gayle have been sold?
The fact Gayle was offered a new deal becomes stranger with every passing week. Talisman Callum Wilson missed the defeat at Manchester United and draw with Leeds through injury, and Gayle still didn't play a single second in either.
At 31-years-old, Gayle would have surely wanted to get out and play regular football, so keeping him at St James' Park means everyone has lost out.
So, unless something dramatic changes in the coming months, and Gayle gets a chance and scores a few, he'll surely be moved on or loaned out in January.
