Competing in his first match since a WWE ring since 2004, Brock Lesnar shockingly lost to John Cena at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view event in 2012.

With Extreme Rules just a few hours away, we take a look back at one of the most memorable moments in the pay-per-view history, Brock Lesnar's return match in 2012.

Returning to WWE after an eight-year hiatus on the April 2 episode of WWE Raw in 2012, Brock Lesnar targetted John Cena, setting up a match between the two at Extreme Rules later that month.

With Lesnar back with the company following his time with UFC, many people expected the former WWE Champion to make light work of John Cena, but that's not how things panned out.

The pay-per-view, which took place at the Allstate Arena in Chicago on April 29, saw John Cena defeat Brock Lesnar in an Extreme Rules match which main evented the show.

While John Cena was still a top guy in WWE, the fact that Brock Lesnar lost his first match back with the company was surprising, especially considering how 'The Beast' has been booked since.

The working theory is that WWE felt as if John Cena needed a big win, with the Hollywood megastar having lost to The Rock at WrestleMania XXVIII earlier that month.

It would be another four months until Brock Lesnar wrestled for WWE, defeating Triple H at the SummerSlam pay-per-view event on August 19.

It would be another two years until Brock Lesnar got his revenge over John Cena, pretty much squashing the former WWE Champion at the SummerSlam event in 2014.

Brock Lesnar will next be in action at Crown Jewel next month, when he goes one-on-one with Universal Champion Roman Reigns in Saudi Arabia.

You can watch WWE Crown Jewel on October 21 live in the US on Peacock, and in all other international markets on the WWE Network.
