Pardew wants points boost

Alan Pardew is hoping to get past Tottenham on the weekend to show that Newcastle are capable of beating the best in the league, with the Toon hoping to hold on to fourth position on the Barclays Premier League table.

Newcastle have collected 15 points from seven matches so far this season, and have silenced critics who may have thought that without a marquee striker the side would struggle at the beginning of their campaign.

And Pardew believes that this weekend’s match up with Tottenham will be a great test as the Toon aim to show they can stand up with the big sides.

“It’s a watershed in terms of just how strong Spurs are and, if we can put in a performance here, then it will really give us confidence ahead of our games coming up against the really top sides in the Premier League next month,” he said.

“We did well against the top sides last year. Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool and Spurs were teams that we all gave a game to. I expect this to be a hell of a game too.”

Pardew also pointed out that the fans will be relishing in the prospect of a fast moving game with Spurs.

“It’s a great game for the fans too – there is pace all over the pitch,” he explained.

“You only have to look at one wing and you are going to have Gareth Bale flying down one way, and then we have Obertan’s pace on the same side going the other.

“That match-up alone should whet the appetite for most fans.”
