WWE: Original plans for Shield break-up had Seth Rollins as referee for huge WrestleMania match

Original plans for Shield break-up had Seth Rollins as referee for huge match

The break-up of The Shield in June 2014 was one of the best moments in recent WWE history, but it wasn't the company's original plan.

Speaking on the latest Broken Skull Sessions episode, Seth Rollins revealed that there were plans to break up The Shield slightly earlier, around December 2013 or January 2014.

This would have led to a big singles match at WrestleMania XXX between Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns, with Rollins unfortunately missing out.

Rollins revealed that he was still slated to play a role in the marquee match, with WWE planning on having him being a “special referee or something” for the big Ambrose vs. Reigns encounter.

The trio spoke to WWE higher-ups about wanting to have a proper run as a babyface stable for a few months, so the implosion of the group was delayed for a few more months.

At WrestleMania XXX, The Shield teamed up to take on the makeshift trio of Kane and the New Age Outlaws, going on to feud with a reformed Evolution in the following months.

When those plans were delayed, WWE pivoted into having Seth Rollins break-up with the group, with the former NXT Champion siding with The Authority on the June 2, 2014 episode of WWE Raw.

Speaking to Stone Cold Steve Austin on the podcast, Seth Rollins also said that the three men were only told they'd be splitting up as a faction on the day that their break-up was planned.

During the same episode, Seth Rollins spoke about being "ready to strangle" WWE Chairman Vince McMahon after an infamous match in 2019, which you can read more about by clicking right here.

You can listen to and watch Seth Rollins' fantastic Broken Skull Sessions episode right now in the US on Peacock and in all other international markets on the WWE Network.
