Javier Hernandez’s header with ten minutes remaining denied Liverpool their fourth successive home win over Manchester United after a stuttering affair at Anfield.

Steve Gerrard’s free-kick, on his return to the starting eleven looked to have inflicted upon United their first defeat in the league this season.

But substitute Hernandez grabbed a point with a predatory header after Nani’s corner had been flicked on by Danny Welbeck.

Kenny Dalglish was able to call upon Gerrard for the visit of United, who left Wayne Rooney, Hernandez and Nani on the bench.

A tight first half saw just one real chance fall the way of Luis Suarez, who saw David de Gea parry his goal-bound effort.

After the break the contest opened up somewhat and after Charlie Adam was fouled by Rio Ferdinand, Gerrard stepped up to curl past a motionless De Gea.

United reacted by introducing Rooney, Nani and Hernandez into the contest, and it was the Mexican who drew the visitors level with 10 minutes remaining.

Nani’s corner cause confusion in the hosts’ defence, and following Welbeck’s flick, Hernandez pounced to net his third of the season.

In a frantic finale, Dirk Kuyt saw De Gea palm away his volley, before the Spaniard’s sprawling save was equal to Jordan Henderson’s dipping shot as the points were shared.
