Ralph Hasenhuttl is still loving life in the Southampton hotseat and has no intention of leaving St Mary's any time soon, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

How have Southampton started the new season under Hasenhuttl?

Southampton are still searching for their first Premier League win of the campaign after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend.

However, that was just their second domestic defeat and, having also recorded four top flight draws, Saints currently find themselves a point above the relegation zone.

Also, Hasenhuttl worked his way into the south coast club's history books last month as he led Southampton to the biggest away win in their history by beating League Two side Newport County 8-0 in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

The Austrian also went into the season after seeing two key players - Danny Ings and Jannik Vestergaard - leave St Mary's just a matter of days earlier.

Ings, who finished last season as Saints' top goalscorer after finding the back of the net 13 times, completed a £25million switch to Aston Villa.

Vestergaard joined Leicester City in a £15million deal after missing just eight Premier League fixtures last term.

What has Tom Barclay said about Hasenhuttl?

Hasenhuttl headed to Southampton after securing 41 victories during an 83-match reign at Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

The 54-year-old had walked away from the German club just a matter of months earlier and, having tasted management in the Champions League, Barclay questioned whether he would enjoy life at Southampton.

However, the journalist insists Hasenhuttl remains fully committed to Saints.

Barclay told GMS: "There have been times when I've questioned, given what he did at Leipzig, whether Hasenhuttl would be as up for this because I thought his stock was probably higher than where Southampton are at the moment, which is basically trying to stay in the Premier League.

"But he seems to love it and seems to really relish the challenge.

"It works really well for the club and him and that's why they back him so much."

Has Hasenhuttl ever looked like leaving St Mary's?

Hasenhuttl was appointed as Southampton's boss in December 2018, replacing the sacked Mark Hughes.

However, he has endured difficult situations, not least the 9-0 hammering at the hands of Leicester City in 2019.

The rout led to questions over Hasenhuttl's future, but the Saints hierarchy opted against making a managerial change.

Southampton suffered a second 9-0 thrashing last season, this time against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

To make matters worse, statistics show Saints have won just four of their last 27 Premier League outings and accumulated only 21 points in 2021.
