Aston Villa news: Dean Smith's rising star singled out after facing Pogba and Fernandes

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith celebrating with Kortney Hause at Old Trafford

Birmingham Live journalist Ashley Preece was impressed by the way Aston Villa youngster Jacob Ramsey held his own against Manchester United’s array of stars at Old Trafford on Saturday.

How did Ramsey perform against Man United?

Ramsey has established himself in the Villa side in recent weeks, and he made his fourth league start of the season in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men.

The 20-year-old could easily have been overawed by the occasion, but instead he delivered an accomplished display, making two tackles and completing 82.4% of his attempted passes during his 85 minutes on the pitch (via WhoScored).

His industrious performance helped Villa claim a rare win at the Theatre of Dreams, as Kortney Hause’s late header sealed a 1-0 victory for the Midlands-based club.

What did Preece say about Ramsey?

Reflecting on that eye-catching victory for Dean Smith’s team, Preece singled out Ramsey for praise.

When asked by GIVEMESPORT if Ramsey could be a regular starter for Villa throughout the season, Preece’s answer was short and sweet, with the journalist pointing out that the rising star had proven his worth by matching up well against the likes of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes on the weekend.

He said: “Yeah 100%. And he started once more on the weekend against your Pogba’s and your Fernandes’s, and he did well.”

Is Ramsey now a guaranteed starter at Villa?

Last season, Ramsey was largely used as an impact substitute, making 16 of his 22 top-flight appearances from the bench. He has come on leaps and bounds since then, though, and now looks to be right at home at the heart of Villa’s midfield.

With Smith switching to a 3-5-2 formation since the start of the month, Ramsey appears to be the ideal option to complement John McGinn and Douglas Luiz in the middle of the park. If the Villa boss sticks with this system moving forwards, it is hard to see Ramsey dropping out of the starting XI any time soon.

Which of the following Aston Villa players didn't score in the club's 7-2 victory over Liverpool last season?

However, Villa do have some exciting attacking players in their ranks such as Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey who could be pushing for more game time as the season progresses.

Should Smith move back to the 4-2-3-1 setup that he went with for much of last year, this could see Buendia and Bailey come into the reckoning when they are fully fit and up to speed, which may mean that Ramsey drops out of the team from time to time to accommodate Villa’s two summer signings.
