Aston Villa transfer news: Dean Smith's £25m signing compared to Wolves star Adama Traore

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith

Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey is more technically gifted than Wolverhampton Wanderers' sought-after Adama Traore, according to Birmingham Live journalist Ashley Preece.

How did Bailey's move to Villa Park come about?

Dean Smith was able to splash the cash during the summer transfer window after seeing Jack Grealish complete a £100million switch to Manchester City, breaking the British record fee.

Villa ended up being the Premier League's fifth biggest spenders before the deadline passed as they parted with £93million to bolster their squad.

A large chunk of that cash was spent on Jamaica international winger Bailey, with German outfit Bayer Leverkusen accepting a bid of £25million.

Bailey headed to Villa Park having shone in the Bundesliga, scoring 28 goals and contributing a further 21 assists in 119 German top flight appearances.

The 24-year-old has already shown Villa fans what he is capable of by grabbing an assist on his debut and recording his first goal with a thunderous strike against Everton earlier this month.

However, injuries have already been causing havoc and he has been ruled out of action until after the upcoming international break due to suffering a thigh strain.

What has Ashley Preece said about Bailey?

Preece has compared Bailey to a former Villa winger in Adama Traore, who is currently on the books of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The journalist believes Bailey is of greater value than Traore, with his goalscoring performance against Everton demonstrating his threat in the final third of the pitch.

Preece told GMS: "The last really quick winger who was at Villa that can be compared to Bailey is Adama Traore.

"He wasn't at Villa too long but I think Bailey's better technically than Adama Traore.

"His left foot is devastating and we saw that against Everton."

When was Traore on Villa's books?

Villa forked out £7million to sign Traore from Spanish giants Barcelona in 2015, but he only went on to make 12 appearances for the Midlands club.

Traore then switched to Middlesbrough a year later and joined his current employers after Wolves triggered his £18million release clause in 2018.

Which club did Villa sign Trezeguet from?

The pacy winger has gone on to score 10 goals and notch 18 assists in 139 appearances for the Molineux-based club, leading to interest from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window.

However, Spurs failed to successfully negotiate a season-long loan move which had the view to a permanent £40million deal, while a £30million bid was also rejected.

Wolves held onto the 25-year-old after Spurs refused to meet their £45million valuation.
