Messi netted his first goal for PSG since joining the French club from Barcelona in the summer. It was a moment of magic from the Argentinian, who finished with aplomb from 20 yards out following a neat one-two with Kylian Mbappe.
Expectations on Messi upon joining were high and no goals in his first three games for PSG led to some premature concerns that he wouldn’t fit in alongside Mbappe and Neymar.
But in one swift move, the 34-year-old showed the world that he’s still got it.
“I’m very happy to have scored,” Messi told Canal+ after the game, per The Guardian. “I hadn’t been able to play recently and this was only my second game in this stadium.
“I’m adapting to my new team. The more we forwards play together the better our relationship will be. We all need to grow together and improve and keep giving our best.”
There was talk in the summer that Messi could join Manchester City, so it must have pained the reigning Premier League champions that the six-time Ballon d’Or winner was the one to compel them to defeat.
By scoring against City, Messi improved his incredible record against Premier League clubs to 27 goals in 35 appearances.
Gary Lineker, one of Messi’s most ardent fans, paid tribute to his record by claiming it proves he could cut it in England.
“All in the Champions League and all against the so called big six…and some say he couldn’t do it here,” Lineker tweeted.
And he’s right. Messi has faced no problems against English teams throughout his career, and he’s only come up against the very best that the country has to offer.
A video of Messi ‘destroying’ Premier League teams was posted on YouTube last year by creator Fad3nHD and it’s well worth revisiting after his his latest effort.

“One of the highest scorers against the top 6 while not even playing in the Premier League,” reads one of the comments. “Simply amazing.”
Messi will look to further add to his record when he travels to Manchester to face Pep Guardiola’s side again on November 24.
Few would bet against him doing so.
