Mercedes' former vice-president for motorsport, Norbert Haug, has labelled Lando Norris 'remarkable' and sung his praises despite the Briton's heartbreaking finish to the Russian Grand Prix at the weekend.

Norris has had a stellar year in Formula 1 and would have pretty much capped his campaign off with a third of it left to run had he converted his first-ever pole position in the sport into his first-ever race win.

He was a matter of laps away, too, but the weather gods had other ideas as the heavens opened and that, combined with the call from him and the team to initially stay on slicks, swept away that elusive victory.

The McLaren man has had a top campaign nevertheless, and Haug paid tribute to his performances so far this year speaking to Servus TV, saying it was great to see Norris roll the dice and try and bring it home, calling him 'remarkable' in the process:

"I think without information from the pits Lewis would have stayed out as well. I think it's great when a young driver like Norris tries something like this. This young man is very remarkable; he has shown excellent performances all season."

Haug is right, Norris has been wonderful to watch this year and it speaks volumes that he has a real fighting chance of third in the Drivers' standings despite not being in a Mercedes or Red Bull.

F1 has some top talents set to star for the next decade or so, and Norris is right near the top of the pile in that regard.
