Thomas Vermaelen has signed a contract extension with Arsenal, with the Belgian international committing his future to the north London club long-term.

Arsenal are yet to confirm how long the new deal is, but the news will be pleasing for Gunners fans as Arsene Wenger moves to shore up key players and ensure a successful future for the Gunners.

Wenger said that Vermaelen’s signature was a key aim this season, and with that now achieved, the side are in an even better position to move further up the Barclays Premier League table.

“We are absolutely delighted that Thomas has signed a new long-term contract. Our plan is always to sign top quality players and with Thomas extending his contract, we have done just that,” Wenger explained.

“Thomas is a special player, who has always made a huge contribution on the pitch and we are looking forward to him being a part of our future at Arsenal Football Club.”

Vermealen also expressed delight at having the deal done and dusted, with the 25-year-old having now made 54 appearances for the club, and planning to make a lot more.

“I am really happy to have signed a new contract with Arsenal,” he said.

“I always had the intention to stay here. I feel there is a big belief in me from the Club, from the boss and from the fans and that is one of the reasons why I stayed.

“Arsenal is a fantastic Club. We have great supporters, we’re doing well financially and we are playing with some quality young players now and they will develop, which is very good for the future.”

With big players including Robin Van Persie, Theo Walcott and Andrey Arshavin coming into the final two years of their contracts, Wenger will no doubt be working overtime to come to extended agreements with as many top players as possible.
