Tottenham news: "Fundamental transfer problem" after Spurs make £60m investment

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has urged Nuno Espirito Santo to start playing some of his new signings.

How have the new signings fared so far?

It was a quiet summer by Tottenham’s usual standards, but even so, new sporting director Fabio Paratici managed to bring in four players, which cost the club £60m.

However, those four have made next to no impact in the Premier League this season. Goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini is yet to feature in the league, although he was only ever going to play in the Europa Conference League and domestic cups, with Hugo Lloris doing a fine job between the sticks.

But, defensively, Cristian Romero, has featured just twice in the Premier League, of which one was as an injury-time substitute against Manchester City on the opening day. The Argentine did start the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea, but was then dropped by Santo, whilst deadline day signing Emerson Royal started both the Palace and Chelsea games before coming on in the second-half at the Emirates.

That leaves Bryan Gil, who’s yet to taste Premier League action from the start, although his lack of physicality could prove a factor as to why he’s still waiting to make his full debut. But following his spirited late cameo at Arsenal, his first start could arrive against Aston Villa on Sunday.

It means that those four signings have made just three starts between them, and Bridge wants to see them thrown in sooner rather than later.

What did Bridge say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Every summer this happens. Tottenham’s new signings take about six months to fully integrate into the team.

“You look at Arsenal on Sunday. Aaron Ramsdale, they laughed at his transfer fee, he was brilliant Sunday. Ben White, they laughed at his transfer fee, he looks at home already. Tomiyasu, was supposed to join Spurs, all of a sudden, he joins Arsenal, and wins his second man of the match award.

“Where is Tottenham’s new right-back? On the bench. Where is Tottenham’s £47m centre-back? On the bench. Where is Bryan Gil? On the bench. That is the fundamental problem with Tottenham right now, get them in, play them. We forked out all this money for the guy, I know it’s a loan, but we are going to have to pay the money, and he’s on the bench!”

Did Tottenham Hotspur sign Moussa Sissoko on transfer deadline day in 2016?

Who should start?

Despite a poor showing against Arsenal, Japhet Tanganga has done himself justice at right-back, but to his left, Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez are continuing to make mistakes, which is why Santo needs to decide his best centre-back pairing, which must include Romero in it.

Moving forward, with Tottenham blunt in attack for virtually the whole season, Gil’s performances in Europe, the cups and off the bench have surely earned him a chance to show what he can do from the start.
