Ronald Koeman's beleaguered Barcelona put in yet another dismal performance on Wednesday evening as they were brushed aside by Benfica in the Champions League.

Following on from a 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in their Group E opener at the Camp Nou a fortnight ago, fans of the Blaugrana were hopeful that their team would register the first points of their European campaign, as they took on opponents who only finished third in last season's Primeira Division.

It wasn't to be, though. Outclassed once again, Barcelona fell to defeat by the same scoreline as they had done two weeks prior. The humiliating nature of the loss means Koeman could now have just hours left as Barca boss.

The writing was on the wall for the La Liga giants after just three minutes at the Estadio da Luz when Darwin Nunez cut inside and fired past Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The away side managed to avoid any further damage in the opening period, trailing 1-0 at the interval.

However, barely five minutes into the second-half, they could have easily conceded again in the most bizarre of circumstances.

Now, as a coach, you always want your goalkeeper to have control of his area. Matters any further upfield, though, are generally best left to other members of the team - particularly when the ball is on the half-way line.

Koeman, then, likely couldn't believe his eyes when Ter Stegen charged out of his goal to try deal with a Benfica through-ball that he had absolutely no business being anywhere near.

There's playing as a sweeper-keeper and then there's this. Abandoning all sense of reason, Ter Stegen hared after the ball, but was quickly left stranded as opening goalscorer Nunez beat him to possession.

The 29-year-old German shot-stopper could only look on as Nunez's resulting strike at an empty net found the outside of the post, sparring his blushes.

You would expect that Ter Stegen might have learnt from a similar escapade last season against Atletico Madrid in La Liga, where Yannick Carrasco did punish his poor judgement.

You can check out Wednesday night's howler below. We still have no idea what Ter Stegen was thinking here!

Ultimately, the miss itself only delayed the inevitable for Barcelona. Rafa Silva doubled Benfica's lead on 69 minutes, before Nunez secured his brace with a penalty eleven minutes from time.

The result means Barca are firmly rock-bottom of their Champions League group. It would be no surprise to see a change of manager - or even goalkeeper - by the time they play Dynamo Kiev at home in their next European fixture.
