Alex Telles enjoyed his best night in a Manchester United shirt on Wednesday evening.

The Brazilian has struggled for minutes since signing for the Red Devils in 2020.

But an injury to Luke Shaw meant he was chosen to start in the Champions League against Villarreal at Old Trafford.

And he marked the occasion with a stunning goal.

United were 1-0 down when they were given a free-kick in a crossing position.

Bruno Fernandes picked out Telles on the edge of the box and the left-back produced a stunning volley that found the back of the net.

It was a sensational way to open his account for the club.

Telles would not even have been positioned on the edge of the box if it were not for Fernandes.

Speaking to MUTV, Fernandes revealed that he instructed the Brazilian to wait on the edge of the box and promised to pick him out.

"Alex was coming to me and he wanted me to do the overlap and if there was a chance, he would pass it to me in the box,” Bruno said.

“I tell him, 'No, just go to the edge of the box and I will ping the ball over there and you just kick it first time or if you have time, control it.' But after that, it's all the quality of Alex.

“Nothing to do with me. Okay the ball was good, the ball went straight to Alex but Alex made a really good strike and it was an unbelievable goal, honestly."

Telles will no doubt be relieved that he listened to his teammate.

United would go on to win 2-1 thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo's late goal. Their next Champions League game comes against Atalanta on October 20.
