Lionel Messi showed his commitment to the Paris Saint-Germain cause by agreeing to deploy a surprise tactic in their Champions League win over Manchester City, according to Get French Football News journalist Adam White.

What did Messi do to grab the headlines?

Messi joined French giants PSG from Barcelona last month, with the six-time Ballon d'Or winner signing a contract worth a minimum of £25million per year.

The Argentina international was forced to leave Barcelona after the La Liga club were unable to sign off a new contract that had been agreed with the attacker due to "financial and structural obstacles".

He grabbed his first goal with his new employers as PSG secured a 2-0 victory over Manchester City at Parc des Princes.

But the 34-year-old caught the eye in more unusual circumstances as he was seen laying on the floor in an attempt to stop a City free-kick going under PSG's defensive wall, leading to former England international Rio Ferdinand labelling the tactic as "disrespectful" to Messi during his BT Sport punditry duties, via talkSPORT.

Ferdinand's fellow BT Sport pundit Owen Hargreaves was also shocked by the move and, via the Sun, stated "we couldn't believe it".

What has Adam White said about the incident?

White admits the decision to have Messi as the PSG ace to lay on the floor in an attempt to block a City attempt felt like a PR stunt.

But the Ligue One expert believes it shows Messi is willing to do the dirty side of the game in order to enjoy success with his new employers.

White told GIVEMESPORT: "I think it says that Messi is committed. I think it feels like a bit of a PR stunt  - it has that feel about it. I'm sure it wasn't and I'm sure it's just part of the game plan but maybe some might argue that Messi's move was not based on football and it's based on other things like money and prestige.

"Some might argue he is not entirely committed because it's not Barcelona.

"I think this was one of those little things that says he is committed, he is all in at PSG and he's willing to do the dirty work to win what they need to win."

What was the reaction to Messi's goalscoring performance?

PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino admits he could not help but celebrate Messi breaking his duck in the French capital.

Manchester City chief Pep Guardiola managed Messi during his successful four-year stint in charge of Barcelona.

He claimed Messi "is unstoppable" during his post-match press conference at the Parc des Princes.
