Arsene Wenger has rejected suggestions Arsenal tried to sign Marseille midfielder Andre Ayew during the summer.

Ayew claimed the Gunners had made an approach for him during the transfer window as Wenger scoured the market for midfield reinforcements.

However, the Arsenal boss has denied this was ever the case, although the Frenchman did reveal his admiration for the 21-year-old.

"I like the player but we didn't approach him," said Wenger when asked about the Ghana international.

"We have many wingers. We brought in Gervinho and we have Arshavin, Walcott and we brought in Oxlade-Chamberlain too.

"Ayew is a very talented player but in the middle we have a lot of players too. On Wednesday we have eight midfielders and we could have had Jack Wilshere too but he is injured."

Ayew will have an opportunity to pit himself against Arsenal on Wednesday night as the north Londoners face Marseille in the Champions League.

Arsenal travel to the Stade Velodrome looking for their second win of this year's group stage.
