Journalist Ashley Preece has suggested that Aston Villa strikers Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins could form a formidable partnership this season when things finally click between them.

How have Ings and Watkins performed as a partnership?

Watkins missed the first two games of the season due to injury, and was only introduced as a late substitute for Villa's third league outing of the campaign against Brentford.

However, he is now moving towards his best condition, and has played alongside Ings in each of Villa's last three top-flight matches.

Neither Ings or Watkins have scored while playing together so far, although the former did manage to get an assist in the side's 3-0 win over Everton last month.

What does Preece make of the Ings-Watkins partnership?

Preece has admitted that Watkins is still gaining experience playing alongside a strike partner, having largely operated as a lone forward last term in Dean Smith's side.

However, the Birmingham Live writer believes that the duo will be a force to be reckoned with once they start understanding each other's games better, and finding the net on a regular basis.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “That partnership, Watkins needs to learn to play in a two. Ings has obviously done it for a while at Southampton. So yeah, a work in progress at the moment. And, once they are scoring goals, it’s a frightening prospect, isn’t it?”

Could Watkins and Ings click into gear against Tottenham?

On Sunday, Villa will go in search of their third straight Premier League win when they travel to north London to take on a Tottenham side who had a torrid September.

After ending August at the top of the table, Nuno Espirito Santo's men lost all three of their league games last month, conceding three goals in each of their defeats to Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Arsenal.

The team look increasingly fragile at the back, which could leave Ings and Watkins sensing their moment to spring into action this weekend.

The pair have had chances to get on the scoresheet in recent weeks but have been unable to take them. Based on the recent performances of Spurs, the Villa duo are likely to get more opportunities against the hosts' shaky backline, and it may only take one goal for Ings and Watkins to spark into life and really start to show their true potential as a combination.
