Journalist Luke Hatfield has described Alex Mowatt's goal against Cardiff as "absurd" – and reckons the West Brom midfielder is on course to dominate the Baggies' goal of the season competition.

What happened against Cardiff?

West Brom cruised to their sixth Championship victory of the season on Tuesday evening, scoring four times in a dominant performance in south Wales.

Karlan Grant's early strike set the Baggies on the way to another three points, with a Curtis Nelson own goal, Mowatt and then Matt Phillips sealing their second 4-0 success of the campaign.

West Brom's opening two goals of the night were completely different, with Grant's a fine, crisp finish from outside the box, whilst Nelson's unfortunate own goal was a slice of good fortune for the Midlands outfit.

However, there was nothing lucky about the third as Mowatt drilled a sensational half-volley from 25-yards out right into the top-corner. Even by his own standards, this was something right out of the very top drawer, perhaps even topping his stunning volley at Blackburn earlier this season.

Mowatt arrived at the Hawthorns with a history of scoring goals, more often than not spectacular ones and has continued his goalscoring exploits from last season with this his third in Baggies colours already.

Despite his beauty at Ewood Park back in August, though, Hatfield reckons that this was the best of the lot.

What did Hatfield say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "The goal against Cardiff was absurd. He scored a really good volley against Blackburn, but he just ramped it up another couple of notches.

"It'll be interesting to see what the goal of the season contenders are like for West Brom, because at the moment it's going to be Alex Mowatt first, Alex Mowatt second and Alex Mowatt third."

Is it likely to win goal of the season in the Championship?

If Mowatt continues at his current rate, then he's probably got a better one left in his locker. But in truth, you're going to have to search far and wide to see another strike of similar quality.

Everything about the finish was to be admired. The audacity to take the shot on first-time, the connection, the way the ball rose into the roof of the net and then the arrogance of his celebration as if he expected to score.
