Mikel Arteta believes that Arsenal have dramatically improved their team spirit, with the side taking a tough away win from Marseille and moving to the top of their Champions League group.
Aaron Ramsey scored the winner for the Gunners in injury time in a hard-fought victory against a strong Marseille side who played particularly defensively throughout the night.
And Arteta believes that the win was a sign that the Arsenal squad are now starting to gel with the summer signings, and get their confidence back to challenge for a top four position this season.
“It is a massive win for us,” Arteta told the official Arsenal website.
“When you win away from home in the Champions League it makes a big difference. The group is really tight at the moment so this is a massive victory because it puts us in the lead.”
The midfielder also insisted that the Champions League result will filter through to the side’s Barclays Premier League results too, with the Gunners looking for a confidence boost as they aim to get their campaign back on track.
“We are happier because we are playing much more as a team,” he explained.
“Defensively we have improved so much and in the second half they hardly created anything. We were much more compact and that comes from the work we've been doing in training.
“Hopefully we can build on that because know we've got the talent and with this togetherness around the team we're going to get good results.”
Arsenal face Stoke at the weekend, and although the game is at the Emirates, Arteta still believes it is a tough fixture and one the Gunners can’t take for granted.
He added: “It is a really tough game coming up. We know how strong physically Stoke are, they always put you in trouble and it is going to be tough.
“We have to make sure we recover well for Sunday because we know we need to win every game.”
