Lionel Messi: Rennes fans waited to get a glimpse of PSG star after 2-0 win

Rennes fans were desperate to get a glimpse of Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi tasted defeat in a Paris Saint-Germain jersey for the first time on Sunday afternoon.

The Argentine played the full 90 minutes in the team’s 2-0 loss to Rennes, the first Ligue 1 game in which they’ve dropped points in 2021/22.

Goals from Gaetan Laborde and Flavien Tait either side of half-time sealed an unexpected victory for the home side.

It’s without doubt one of the most surprising wins anywhere in Europe so far this season, with PSG fielding a full-strength XI for the game.

Messi was joined by Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Angel Di Maria in attack, while Marco Verratti featured in midfield for the second consecutive game.

But football’s equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters couldn’t even muster a shot on target during the match at Roazhon Park.

Messi did hit the underside of the crossbar with a free-kick, but that was as close as PSG got to beating Rennes goalkeeper Alfred Gomis.

It was certainly a day to remember for the hosts, however, celebrating victory wasn’t the only thing on the minds of fans in attendance on Sunday.

That’s because after the dust had settled, supporters gathered en masse to get a glimpse of Messi as he left the stadium.

The 34-year-old superstar really is bigger than the sport of football, isn’t he?

But while the receptions he’s received since moving to France have been incredible, Messi will likely be a tad concerned about his performances on the pitch.

The little maestro certainly hasn’t been poor in a PSG shirt, far from it. Nevertheless, the fact he’s yet to score or assist a goal in Ligue 1 is slightly worrying for a player of his calibre.

We’re still backing him to score at least 15 times in the French top-flight this season, though…
