Petr Cech believes that many positives can be taken out of Chelsea’s 5-0 thrashing of Genk in the Champions League last night, with the side aiming to win their first European Cup in the history of the club.

Fernando Torres found his form again to score a brace against the Belgian outfit, while Raul Meireles, Branislav Ivanovic and Salomon Kalou also got on the scoresheet as Chelsea showed their dominance and broke their record for the biggest margin of victory in the Champions League group stage.

And Cech believes that Chelsea showed their dominance in both a physical and mental way last night, with the Blues looking to challenge for both European and English trophies this season.

"From 2-0 we controlled the game and with a few more mistakes from them under pressure, we scored more goals and 5-0 is a good result.

"We knew it was not going to be easy if the mentality was not right and the mentality was brilliant, that's why we made the game look easy.

"At 5-0 up and controlling the game, we didn't allow them to come into the game and score a goal. It is always important to kill the game off and keep a clean sheet."

Chelsea will be closer than ever to qualifying for the last 16 should they defeat Genk away on November 1st. And Cech said that moving into the next stage as quickly as possible has been a big goal for the side.

"It's always the aim," he explained. "The games are coming thick and fast now in the Premier League and Carling Cup and as soon as we are qualified we can concentrate on the other competitions.

"We made a step forward, we need another away and then that will be it for us."

And Cech couldn’t help but praise Torres, who has struggled for form since his £50 million move to Chelsea, but delivered last night.

He added: "You could see his hunger to be on the pitch and to score goals. It was just unlucky he couldn't get the third.”
